Tech billionaire Elon Musk would “love to buy Liverpool Football Club“, according to his dad.

The controversial owner of Tesla has been in the headlines for his support of far-right political causes in recent weeks and is set to head up a new department of Donald Trump’s government. He is worth an estimated $425bn making him the world’s richest man, and saw his worth spike by an incredible $21bn after Trump won the US election in November – with heavy backing from Musk, who also owns social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.

His dad Errol was interviewed on Times Radio, where he was asked about rumours linking him with a takeover at the Premier League giants, he was asked: “Does your son want to buy Liverpool Football Club?” To which the South African laughed, and replied: “I can’t comment on that, they’ll raise the price. Yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it.”

Musk senior was then quizzed further on whether buying the club was “in his son’s sights,” adding: “He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to — so would I. His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool you know.”

However Reds fans were split on any idea of a takeover from Musk – despite his fortune. One fan posted on X: “Anybody that’s in favour of Elon Musk buying Liverpool can do one. I have something called morals…he’s up in arms with Tommy Robinson & co.”

Another added: “He doesn’t match the identity of the city and will ruin the club and create a disconnect from fans and make it a business and a corporation and don’t get me started about the political side,” whilst a third posted: “This would be trading all the money in the world for morals.”

But there wasn’t universal opposition – with a supporter adding: “I mean as long as he doesn’t feed any ideologies onto supporters etc. I don’t care if Liverpool are winning trophies and fans are happy about that, that’s all I care about.”
