Aberdeen are closing in on the £700,000 signing of Kristers Tobers from Grasshoppers.
Jimmy Thelin has made the Latvian captain one of his top defensive targets. The Dons have been in discussions with the Swiss club for over a week now. Grasshoppers were reluctant to sell but Tobers has indicated that he would be keen on a move to Scotland. Aberdeen are now trying to finalise a transfer package and will then look to seal personal terms with the 24-year-old.
Tobers only moved to Switzerland last year from Lechia Gdansk. He fits the modern profile of a defender that Thelin has used at Elfsborg and is keen to bring into Pittodrie. Aberdeen are also trying to push a deal through because they will also need to push for a work permit. The Dons have already signed Danish winger Jeppe Okkels on loan from Preston for the season, with an option to buy and also want Brommapojkarna defender Alexander Jensen.
Aberdeen are currently short of defensive options ahead of their weekend clash with Hearts. Gavin Molloy and Jack Milne are injured, while Slobodan Rubezic is suspended.
