IRONDALE, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) – An Alabama police lieutenant known and respected by many in his community was hit and killed while directing traffic during a church event.
Irondale Police say 60-year-old Lt. Mark Meadows was directing traffic Monday on Grants Mill Road during the “21 Days of Prayer” event at the Church of the Highlands. He was hit by a passing vehicle just before 7 a.m. and taken to the hospital, where he later died, WBRC reports.
Meadows was setting out traffic cones when he was struck, according to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting an investigation. The agency says Meadows was struck by a gray 2010 Chevrolet Colorado. The Associated Press reports the 32-year-old driver of the truck stopped at the scene. It was not immediately clear whether he was facing charges.
Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. said in a statement that Meadows was “a treasured member of our Irondale family for over 30 years.”
“He was a man of few words but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant,” Stewart said. “We are comforted in knowing that he is with his heavenly father, and we will continue to cover his family in prayer as they grieve this great loss.”
In addition, Meadows had been with the Church of the Highlands since the Grants Mill location opened almost 18 years ago, according to senior pastor Chris Hodges.
“He is family to us. All our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, daughter, son, family members, fellow officers and the many who loved him. Even in the most difficult and trying times, we know our God will provide comfort, strength and reassurance based on the promise of heaven. We as a church will do all we can to care for his family,” Hodges said.
The city says grief support is being offered to members of the Irondale Police Department and others in need.
