With the first full week of 2025 coming to a close, the festive period is officially over.
January can be a dour month in Scotland, with cold and wintery weather and no Christmas or Hogmanay to look forward to. However, that is why it is the perfect time to plan a lush staycation.
As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, Scotland is speckled with quaint villages and towns. Each have their own charming features, fascinating histories, and picturesque walks waiting to be discovered.
While some spots have risen to fame, the country still harbours a bevy of hidden gems offering unique adventures. We have rounded up some of these lesser-known villages that are worth checking out in 2025.
Read on for five hidden gem Scottish villages that are a must-visit this year.
Crovie, Aberdeenshire
Nestled in Aberdeenshire, Crovie has been hailed as Scotland’s most dramatic village — seemingly cascading into the sea. Perched at the base of towering cliffs, the picturesque single track that is lined with lovely houses lies so close to the ocean that locals claim you can “taste the salt”.
Adding to the hidden allure, getting here by car isn’t an option and the sea waves are notorious for lashing against the buildings. Elsewhere, Crovie’s charm is matched by nearby Pennan and Gardenstown — both equally deserving of a spot on any itinerary.
Aberlady, East Lothian
Aberlady lies quietly along the East Lothian coast. Its popularity has soared in recent years, yet it remains an undiscovered jewel compared to North Berwick or Gullane.
The village is famous for its stunning bay and for being the home of Scotland’s first Local Nature Reserve. Meanwhile, it is perfect for invigorating walks and birdwatching enthusiasts.
St Abbs, Scottish Borders
While far from a household name, St Abbs is a destination that millions around the world will recognise. The cliff-top Borders village was transformed into ‘New Asgard’ for Avengers: Endgame and also featured as the fictional island of Eroda in Harry Styles’s music video for his hit song Adore You.
Even if you aren’t a Marvel or a Harry Styles fan, St Abbs has plenty to offer. If its breathtaking views and nearby sandy beaches aren’t enough to convince you, its status as a scuba-diving haven might.
Lochranza, Isle of Arran
If you are looking for a peaceful and one-of-a-kind staycation destination in Scotland this year, then its many islands are worth considering. In particular, the Isle of Arran is an underrated gem that is often referred to as ‘Scotland in miniature’.
Lochranza is one of Arran’s most charming settlements, and is even said to have inspired Sir Walter Scott’s poem The Lord of the Isles. The village is known for its jaw-dropping ruined castle, distillery, and scenic nearby hiking trails.
Shieldaig, Wester Ross
Finally, while the Highlands are peppered with quaint villages and hamlets worth exploring, Shieldaig stands apart from all of the rest. With its white-washed cottages and prime position on Loch Torridon, it certainly deserves a spot on your travel list.
Just off the coast, Shieldaig Island is managed by the National Trust of Scotland. It boasts rocky outcrops, seaweed, scrub and Caledonian Pine trees.
