WELCH, W.Va. – The City of Welch will be having their excess levy election coming up on Feb. 1.
City residents will have the opportunity to vote against or in favor of additional taxes on select classes of property. According to the City of Welch’s website the excess levy has been voted through for more than 50 years.
Funding gathered from the levy will be used for maintenance of the McDowell County Public Library, pay annual expenses for maintenance and operation of public parks, playgrounds and recreational sites in the city.
The levy also supports electric service charges for streets lights and pays to re-build, improve and repair streets. The levy would create additional taxes on class one, two and four properties for two fiscal years.
The last day to register to vote in the special election is Monday Jan. 13. voting for all wards will take place at Welch City Hall from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm.
Early voting will be held from Jan. 17 until Jan. 29 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. City hall will be open on Saturday Jan. 18 and Saturday Jan. 25 between 9 am and 5 pm for early voting.
