BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -The recent winter weather has brought dangerous conditions for a lot of people in the area.

The Bluefield Union Mission has been helping those who are facing the cold and who have lost power, heat, and water. They see the mission has seen an increase in people in need of their potentially lifesaving help.

The mission’s director, Craig Hammond, says they are able to supply those needs, providing shelf-stable food, warm clothing, kerosene, wood, and coal, or even just a place to keep warm.

He says their warming room is full almost every day, with around two dozen staying overnight and adds that this winter storm has brought people to their door who have never needed the help of the Bluefield Union Mission before.

“…There was folks that came and just, because they had no power, they realized that they’d never been in this predicament before, and they came and sought our assistance, and we were more than happy to help them, and they were first time. They just never thought they’d be in that predicament…” says Hammond.

Hammond says they are faring well, thanks to support from the community. However, he encourages people to donate gloves in a variety of sizes.

If you are in need of assistance, he says you can stop by or call ahead at 304-327-8167.
