ROUND ROCK, Texas — The Round Rock Police Department (RRPD) said a man is dead after an officer was involved in a shooting near Interstate 35 and Westinghouse Road on Tuesday night.
In a media briefing early Wednesday, police said they received a call around 9:40 p.m. about a vehicle that crashed in a field near southbound I-35, not far from the Texas Crushed Stone Co. The caller claimed a man was driving erratically before the crash.
Once on scene, officers said they saw a man walking towards a wooded area, and they used a drone to help locate him.
The man was found, and police said he started shooting at them and at the drone for a few minutes. Police said they could not see the man and were unable to fire back, so the SWAT Team came to assist.
RRPD said a confrontation began, and an officer shot at the suspect, who died on scene. However, it’s uncertain whether the suspect was hit by the officer, or if his death was self-imposed. An autopsy will reveal more information, and the suspect’s identity remains unknown.
One officer is currently on administrative leave, and no law enforcement were injured in the incident.
Police said the roadway was closed due to police activity Tuesday night, but has since reopened Wednesday morning.
