(Gray News) – The United States Postal Service will not be delivering mail on Thursday to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter.
President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning. It is the same day the official state funeral for Carter will be held at the Washington National Cathedral.
As a result of the designation, the Postal Service will not deliver mail. Its offices and facilities will be closed, but there will be “limited package delivery service on that day to ensure the organization does not experience any negative impacts to its package delivery operations.”
Regular activities and service will resume on Friday.
All Postal Service facilities are also required to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff through sunset on Jan. 29 to honor Carter.
The U.S. Supreme Court, stock market and government offices will also be closed on Thursday.
Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy at Carter’s funeral. President-elect Donald Trump said he will attend the service.
The last time a National Day of Mourning was held was in December 2018 following the death of former President George H.W. Bush.
