Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson urging Lanarkshire residents to get vaccinated and take precautions as cases of flu, RSV and Covid are increasing both in the community and for hospital admissions.

The flu vaccine is the best possible protection against the virus which can change from year to year.

This year’s winter vaccination programme is focused on protecting those most vulnerable to flu and COVID-19. This includes older adults, and people with underlying health conditions, such as heart conditions or liver disease that put them at greater risk of illness from flu and COVID-19.

Pregnant women are also strongly recommended to take up the vaccines, to give them and their babies the best possible protections against serious illness from these viruses.

Ms Adamson said: “I want to thank all the health workers who are navigating a challenging winter period and for their efforts to keep us well over Christmas.

“For most people who get flu, it will be a short illness with recovery in a few days.

“But some people will develop complications which can be life-threatening and that is why getting protected through vaccination is crucial.

“The flu virus changes over time and COVID-19 vaccine protection fades. Influenza is much worse than a common cold.

“Getting vaccinated is the best protection against serious illness from these viruses.

“The winter period brings increased prevalence of these illnesses. Health workers are doing an incredible job but rising cases are putting immense pressure on frontline services.

“If you are eligible for vaccination, please come forward. Beyond that, you can reduce the chance of catching and spreading viruses to others by taking sensible precautions: practise good hand hygiene and stay at home if you have respiratory symptoms.”
