AUSTIN, Texas — A company that develops 3D printing technology and helps 3D print homes and buildings around Central Texas is laying off employees.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, ICON Technology laid off 114 people on Tuesday.
In a statement, an ICON spokesperson told KVUE the company made the difficult decision to “realign their team” to focus on their priorities, which include accelerating development of the company’s new robotic system, called Phoenix, and getting 3D printing technology out to builders.
“While our mission remains to develop these intelligent machines to build humanity’s future, we will continue to design and build a selection of key projects across residential, hospitality, social/affordable and those within the Department of Defense with a more streamlined team,” the spokesperson said.
Last year, ICON helped build 3D-printed housing developments in Wimberley and Georgetown, as well as a 3D-printed Innovation Center at Camp Mabry.
During South By Southwest 2024, the Austin construction startup unveiled details on four new programs: a robotic construction system, a digital catalog, a printable concrete formula and an AI home design system.
The company said its new robotic system, Phoenix, could cut printing costs in half by saving approximately $25,000 for an average home in the U.S. Pricing begins at $25 per square foot for wall systems and $80 per square foot for the foundation and roof.
