As temperatures continue to plummet in Scotland, drivers are trying to avoid frosty car windscreens at all costs.
A recent TikTok has gone viral with over 10 million views, sharing a driver’s icy windscreen hack. The driver attempts to avoid a frosted windscreen by covering it with cardboard overnight. However, the viral video shows that the cardboard gets stuck due to the ice freezing it to the glass.
And now driving experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts are now warning motorists not to attempt this viral hack, as it could result in damage to your car.
Instead of using cardboard to prevent ice on your cars windscreen, they suggest a towel as that won’t stick to your windscreen. Drivers can buy windscreen covers or use weighted towels which can prevent icy windscreens over winter.
Implementing preventative methods can mean drivers can effectively de-ice their car whilst minimising the risk of damage. It is paramount in winter months to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive in. Always ensure your windscreen and windows are clear from snow and ice, as it is unsafe to drive when your vision isn’t clear.
They also say the best ways to deice your windscreen is by starting your car engine and directing your heating system in the direction of your windscreen to speed up the defrosting process. Once your vehicle begins to heat up, you will find your windscreen will defrost quicker. Using your car’s heating system rather than wiping down condensation with your hand from inside the vehicle will prevent smeared and dirty glass, which is a common problem in winter months.
And they urge using a scraper. It’s a quick way to snow and ice and can be done as your car heating system warms up. Scrapers are designed to remove ice without scratching glass – avoid using personal items such as credit cards as these could have the risk of damaging glass.
