Tony Docherty praised his side for rattling Rangers but believes they should have taken all three points.
The boss was delighted with his team in the 1-1 draw. Docherty, however, was frustrated that Rangers’ equaliser, through Vaclav Cerny, had stood because he felt Dundee should have had a penalty for Clinton Nsiala’s challenge on Simon Murray in the build-up.
He claimed: “I think it was a penalty, the defender was really clumsy going in on Simon Murray. At the time I thought it was really, really clumsy – the fourth official told me they were checking it.
“I was surprised, I thought it was a penalty and I thought they should have taken a bit more time over it. We lost our concentration a bit after that for the Rangers goal, but it was an outstanding performance from my team.”
Docherty was missing eight or nine first-team players but praised his squad for digging deep against the Light Blues. It takes them close to the top six.
He added: “The mentality, the resilience and spirit of the group to put in that level of performance against Rangers when we’re so threadbare in terms of resources. We are digging in, we’re really sound defensively and dangerous on the counter attack.
“Rangers played it a lot in wide areas, which is what we wanted them to do. I was actually disappointed we didn’t take more but it’s a good point. The players deserve huge credit for such a huge performance.”
It gives them a boost ahead of Celtic’s visit next week. Docherty revealed that key man Lyall Cameron missed the game with flu.
He explained: “Lyall reported this morning with flu but Cesar Garza came in and was outstanding. “I don’t want to single anyone out because it was a team effort and the boys gave me everything.”
