A bizarre claim that Kyogo had left Celtic for Atlanta Utd has been deleted from the MLS webiste.
The Japanese star was preparing to take his place on the bench as Brendan Rodgers side took on Dundee United at Parkhead on Wednesday night. But ten minutes before kick-off, an article appeared on the Major League Soccer website announcing that the Hoops hitman had became Atlanta’s latest designated player – meaning he can earn more than the league’s salary cap.
Kyogo was linked with a £10millon move to the Georgia-based franchise last month. However, no offers have been forthcoming and Kyogo remains contracted to Celtic for a further two-and-a-half years. The article read: “Atlanta United have a new Designated Player No.9, announcing Wednesday they’ve acquired Kyogo Furuhashi from Scottish Premiership powerhouse Celtic FC.” It was deleted before the 29-year-old emerged from the subs bench in the 62nd minute against United.
However, Atlanta then did confirm the capture of a new striker about an hour later. And it turned out to be another Japanese star. Cayman Togashi arrived from MLS rivals New York City with the American-born Samurai Blue youth international signing on for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns.
The club have transfer history with Celtic. They signed Greek target man Giorgos Giakoumakis, who netted 22 goals in 38 appearances before moving on to Mexican side Cruz Azul last year.
