A popular Kirkcudbright cafe has closed permanently.

The owners of The Belfry on St Mary Street have announced the restaurant will not be reopening this year.

The cafe closed on December 20 for a Christmas break and the shutdown was initially extended into 2025.

However, it has now been decided it won’t re-open at all.

A post on the cafe’s Facebook page read: “The time has come to say a fond farewell.

“It’s not been the easiest of decisions but we are not reopening. It has been an amazing seven years, and I will never forget all the wonderful people I have met, and all the fun we’ve had.

“I have been so lucky to have worked with some of the most amazing people, people that I will treasure for ever.

“My favourite thing by far has been laughing until our eyes leak and our stomachs hurt.”

Meanwhile, another Dumfries and Galloway restaurant is also set to close as the owners are taking on a new venture.

The Old Schoolhouse near Ringford will close on February 28 ahead of the team there opening Rosava’s in Castle Douglas on March 4.

It had been hoped to run both sites but that has “proved to be just not feasible”.

Rosava’s will be at the King Street site which was The Scottish Pantry for many years before Shirley and Brian Haining retired at the end of 2024.
