South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership has appointed a new associate medical director

Dr Jennifer Gibson joins the Lanarkshire primary care team in her new role focusing on the primary and secondary care interface, pathway development and the contractual environment for general practice.

She will work alongside the partnership’s existing associate medical director Dr Veronica Rainey who leads on primary care services, the efficiency and effectiveness approach to service improvement and quality improvement.

Professor Soumen Sengupta, chief officer for South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “I am delighted to welcome Jennifer to our dedicated senior leadership team.

“Jennifer’s wealth of experience in primary care, cancer care, and palliative medicine, combined with her commitment to improving services, makes her an exceptional addition.

“Her appointment is a further demonstration of the value that we attach to the vital role of primary care as part of our whole health and social care system, and our commitment to enabling primary care transformation for the residents of Lanarkshire. I very much look forward to Jennifer’s leadership and contribution to enhancing health and social care for our communities in this new role.”

Dr Gibson graduated from Glasgow University Medical School in 2003 with an MBChB (Commendation Award) and earned an MRCGP with Distinction in 2007.

She has worked as a GP in Lanarkshire since 2007, serving both as a GP partner and more recently as a salaried GP. From 2019 to 2024, she expanded her expertise as a speciality doctor in palliative medicine in Lanarkshire. She has an interest in palliative medicine, cancer care, education and Realistic Medicine.

Dr Gibson also held several leadership roles, including lead GP for cancer and Macmillan facilitator for palliative care, co-chairing NHS Lanarkshire’s Cancer Interface Group, and being part of the team that established the Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service in Lanarkshire.

Since 2023, she has served as lead GP for education, chairing the education steering group and acting as a deputy clinical lead for realistic medicine.

Dr Gibson added: “It is an honour to be appointed as an associate medical director for South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership and I am looking forward to joining such a dedicated team.

“My focus will be working collaboratively with our colleagues across the whole NHS Lanarkshire area, to help improve services and outcomes for the people of Lanarkshire.”

Dr Gibson took up her new role on Monday, January 6.
