When it comes to laundry, we are all guilty of not separating it properly and the disastrous consequences. Red in with a white wash has to be the worst, no one wants to wear all pink.

And if you’re a wash and fling the whole load into the tumble dryer type of person then you need to be aware of the damage it could do.

A TikTok cleaning guru, whose account shows cleaning and organisation hacks, has shared a tip and that is that you should never wash your clothes in the same cycle as your towels.

@elnazhamai, who has 306,000 followers shows cleaning and organisation hacks, said you are going to damage your favourite items if you do.

She explained: “Never mix towels with your load of clothes. Towels absorb a lot more water in the washing machine and since they take longer to dry, you’re over drying your other clothes and exposing them to too much heat.”

Too much heat on your clothing can cause shrinkage.

Followers were pleased with the tip calling it ‘super helpful’ and some were quick to comment on their own laundry disasters. One said: “I washed a red towel with my other soft coloured clothes. I got some new red clothes.”

Another said: “I’d probably throw the basket in there if the lid would close.” And another reckoned the tip was an effort though and said: “Too much work.”

She also advised to separate heavy fabrics like jeans from delicate items to prevent them causing damage while in the drum, turn dark coloured items inside out and do this too with t-shirts with graphics on them to avoid the print being affected.

Other tips included zipping and buttoning up jeans and sweatshirts to avoid them catching on other items and she said she always uses white vinegar instead of fabric softener as it leaves a layer of residue and reduces the absorption of the your towels.

Elnaz said she never uses drier sheets in the tumble dryer as it can leave a coating of residue inside the drum which over time can affect the ability of your drier to properly work. She suggest instead using wool drier balls
