ALTADENA, Calif. (KCAL/KCBS) – Officials now say there are at least 10 deaths in the Los Angeles fires.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the number late Thursday night. However, the death toll is expected to rise.
One woman says her father died after he refused to evacuate his Altadena home.
Kimiko Nickerson recalls her last conversation with her 83-year-old father, Rodney Nickerson.
“He said he’ll be fine. ‘I’ll be here when you guys come back,’ and he said his house would be here,” Kimiko Nickerson said. “His house is here and he was here, too. He was in his bed when I found him.”
“The last thing he verbally said to me was, ‘I’ll be here tomorrow,’” Kimiko Nickerson added.
Tens of thousands of people in the area have evacuated.
Thousands of structures have burned completely down.
Most of the blazes are still uncontained.
