East Kilbride’s only independent dementia day care centre is holding a crucial fundraising coffee morning this month to help save the under threat service.
East Kilbride and District Dementia Carers Group, a lifeline service in the South Lanarkshire town for over 30 years, is struggling to stay afloat.
The vital service, that provides over 13,000 hours care and support to people with dementia and their carers each year, needs to raise £75,000 this year just to continue providing a service.
At present they are around £46,000 short of that target.
They receive no financial support from the government or local authority, relying on fundraising, donations and grants to survive.
The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, January 18 from 11am till 2pm within the Pine Crescent Sheltered Housing Complex, adjacent to the dementia facility at 169 Pine Crescent, Greenhills, East Kilbride.
Group chairperson, Councillor Archie Buchanan said: “The event, which has free entry, will have coffee, tea and cakes available, and a tombola.
“I hope as many people as possible will come along on the day and support the group who have been providing a vital dementia service for the town of East Kilbride over the past 30 years.”
Group co-ordinator Brian Doig said previously: “There is no denying that we are in a fight to secure our future. People are relying on us and as a group, we do have a responsibility to the people we support, their carers and to our employees.
“We believe that we have a unique service worth fighting for and are doing everything in our power to address the funding shortfall.”
