The suspect shot himself and was shot by police, but it is unclear which gunshot resulted in his death.

AUSTIN, Texas — New details have emerged from an investigation surrounding a shooting involving a Round Rock police officer earlier this week.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night just north of Round Rock, after a man who had allegedly been driving erratically crashed in a field near Interstate 35 and Westinghouse Road, not far from the Texas Crushed Stone Company. Police responded to the scene and located the man walking toward a wooded area nearby.

Police used a drone to help locate him, at which point the man began shooting at the drone and police. SWAT officers then engaged with the man, with one shooting him during the encounter. He also sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later died at the scene.

No officers were injured in the incident. The SWAT officer who shot the man has been put on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, with assistance from the Round Rock Police Department.
