Everton have confirmed the sensational return of legendary manager David Moyes.
The Scot, 61, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal to replace sacked Sean Dyche at Goodison Park and has been tasked with dragging the Toffees clear of relegation. And after his appointment was confirmed on Saturday morning, Moyes immediately sent a message to the club’s fans as he looks to ensure their top-flight status ahead of moving into their new £800million stadium.
Moyes said: “It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club.
“I’m excited to be working with The Friedkin Group and I am looking forward to helping them rebuild the club.
“Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team.”
Executive Chairman Marc Watts said: “We are pleased that David is joining us at this pivotal time in Everton’s history. With over a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to propel us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium. We look forward to working with David to build the foundation of a new era for Everton.”
Moyes spent a hugely successful 11 years in Merseyside before succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013, lasting only 10 months.
He then took over Spanish side Real Sociedad before returning to English football with Sunderland, but couldn’t save the Black Cats from relegation in 2017. Moyes was later appointed West Ham boss and led the club to safety, but was surprisingly let go at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
The ex-Celtic defender returned to the London club a year-and-a-half later and once again kept them in the top-flight, before leading the Hammers to Europa Conference League glory in 2023 – the club’s first piece of major silverware in 43 years. After leaving the Irons last summer, Moyes now returns to his beloved Everton and will take charge of his first game back on Wednesday as they welcome Aston Villa to Goodison Park.
