A 1997 comedy branded Jim Carrey’s ‘best film’ has landed in Netflix’s top ten trending movies list, almost thirty years after its release.
Currently sitting at number nine on the list, just below the streamer’s latest thriller hit Carry-On, Liar Liar came out during the peak of Carrey’s career. In the years leading up to the ’97 flick, he had starred in fan-favourites including The Mask, Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.
Although it premiered after some of the actor’s most beloved roles, viewers continue to praise the movie as their all-time favourite.
The story follows Fletcher Reede (Carrey), a lawyer who has built his life on lies until he is cursed to speak only the truth for 24 hours.
Directed by Tom Shadyac, who later collaborated with Carrey on Bruce Almighty, the slapstick comedy won the 1998 People’s Choice Award for Favourite Comedy Motion Picture. It was also a box office success and made $31,423 on its opening weekend.
Boasting 343,000 reviews on IMDB, moviegoers are still raving about the fantasy film, with many crowning it as the A-list actor’s finest work. One reviewer penned: “[This is] Jim Carrey’s best film. Liar Liar is in my top 3 favourite comedies of all time and my favourite Jim Carrey flick! He was just so awesome and hilarious in Liar Liar!
“Not only did he do mental comedy, but physical comedy that will make your stomach hurt from laughing so much! I’m not kidding when I say that I know a dozen people where we just rehearse the lines from Liar Liar back and forth, because all the scenes are just so memorable.”
Another person said: “Liar Liar works so well with Jim Carrey’s unique acting and humour, and anyone who loves him should definitely enjoy it. Carrey has a great way of being funny that no other actor has that’s why this film succeeds. So just about everyone should get a laugh or 2 out of it.”
While a third wrote: “[This is] one of Jim Carrey’s funniest movies.
“Every minute of Liar Liar is pure fun and every minute means a good laughter. Many moments are hysterical! Jim Carrey is often a great comedian, but this is him at his funniest.”
