Maya Jama has shared her thoughts on Macy Gray’s unexpected behaviour during Saturday’s episode of The Masked Singer. The I Try star, 57, left viewers gobsmacked when she stormed off the stage wearing a Toad In The Hole costume after being eliminated.
And judge Maya, 30, posted a clip of the incident on her Instagram page, captioning it: “Me at any minor inconvenience”. In the video, the Love Island star can be seen looking shocked and telling fellow judge Jonathan Ross: “Toad’s off!” as Macy exits the stage.
The singer caused quite a stir with her abrupt departure from the popular ITV show, with producers reportedly spending nearly an hour persuading her to return for her unmasking and final performance. When host Joel Dommett announced that Toad In The Hole was the third celebrity to be leaving, with Bear being saved, Macy didn’t stick around for the usual reveal and instead walked off set.
A source present at The Masked Singer recording told The Sun that the singer was “totally blindsided”, adding: “When Macy stormed off stage everyone was frozen in shock but as soon as she reached backstage, crew removed her mask so they could talk her down.”
The insider said: “Macy was almost shellshocked to start with and was basically gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version – when obviously she did brilliantly – so was totally blindsided. It was the shock of it for her as well as the upset and in that moment she had a very raw, human reaction and wanted out.”
Joel has also broken his silence on the shock incident, reports the Mirror. He shared his perspective on Paddy McGuinness’s BBC Radio 2 show, saying: “It’s sort of a singing show but it’s also sort of a guessing show – so it kind of doesn’t really sit in either camp.
“And also if you’re a great singer and you make it through then that’s absolutely wonderful, but sometimes, like the case with Macy Gray, she has such a recognisable voice and she’s a legend so you immediately know who it is.
“So it’s kind of one of those where we all know who it is, she might as well go and then the other person can go through as we don’t quite know who they are. So the guessing game continues.”
Joel further added: “The funny thing is, I think it’s a win-win scenario on that game – whether you go through to the final it’s a win as you’re winning it. But also if you go home early it’s a win because you get to go early and you get the same money.”
Macy also stirred up trouble on the Australian version of the programme three years ago. Dressed as Atlantis, Macy was eliminated again, but reportedly refused to leave the stage. Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, one of the judges, claimed that when it was time for the singer to be unmasked and exit the show, she “refused to leave”.
