WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – Following hours of winter weather, a Kansas man went to pick up his girlfriend from work, but neither would ever return home again. The tragedy ended nearly 18 hours later in a way no family ever hopes for.

Nathaniel Boyd, 24, and Whitney Allmond, 26, had been together about a year. In that time, Boyd had already become a father figure to Allmond’s two young children, but their future together is now no longer a reality.

Investigators say Boyd had picked up Allmond from work and was taking her back home about 12:30 a.m. last Sunday. Due to inclement weather, as the couple were headed southbound on Interstate 235, their car rolled down an embankment, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Both Boyd and Allmond were thrown from the car. Investigators say neither was wearing a seat belt.

It was nearly 18 hours later, at 6:20 p.m., when someone called 911 to report seeing the crash. Troopers found the couple, but it was too late. They had both died.

Family members say Allmond was a hardworking woman who had two jobs to care for her 2-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. On her birthday Wednesday, she would’ve turned 27.

Boyd’s mother called him one of the most amazing people she ever met. She says he cared greatly for those closest to him and loved Allmond’s children dearly.

His family is devastated at his unexpected loss and says it’s only been made worse because he didn’t have life insurance.

Both families have set up GoFundMe pages to assist with funeral expenses. The page for Boyd can be found here, and the page for Allmond can be found here.
