BECKLEY, W.Va. – The trial of a woman accused of poisoning and killing her husband is expected to begin this week.
Jury selection for Natalie Cochran’s trial started on Monday. Natalie Cochran is accused of poisoning her husband Michael Cochran with insulin in 2019.
She was re-indicted on a first degree murder charge in October of 2023 after her husband’s body was exhumed, and new medical findings led to prosecutors taking her to trial for a second time.
Cochran was previously charged for the murder nearly six years ago but the case was dismissed.
A variety of motions were filed last Friday in Cochran’s new trial, including an order to suppress a statement made by Cochran while at FCI Hazelton.
The court granted that order, stating that the statement was made in violation of Cochran’s Miranda rights.
Another motion was also approved that will allow for experts to see live video or phone testimony if available.
Other motions were denied, which included a request to suppress a bottle of insulin seized during a search warrant. That evidence will be allowed to be used in court.
A lot of eyes are expected to be on this trial but a motion to sequester or isolate the jury from the public was denied. The court believes instructions to jurors will be sufficient in keeping them unbiased.
Jury selection could stretch into Tuesday but as soon as this trial begins WVVA will be in the courtroom bringing you the very latest in this trial.
Cochran is a former pharmacist. She’s currently serving 11 years in prison for her role in a fraud scheme.
