As winter weather takes its toll, NHS Lanarkshire is seeing an increase in injuries caused by falls.

In response, Lanarkshire’s Specialist Falls Service is offering advice to help everyone stay safe, particularly older adults who are most at risk.

Falls are preventable, and small changes can make a big difference in reducing risk.

Michelle Wilson, Advanced Practitioner Occupational Therapist with NHS Lanarkshire’s Specialist Falls Service, said: “One-third of older adults experience a fall at least once a year. While falls can lead to physical injury, they also have a significant impact on confidence and independence.

“These impacts can ripple into other areas of life, making everyday tasks more challenging and isolating individuals from activities they enjoy. The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of falling while staying active and independent.”

Michelle added: “Our aim is to empower individuals to live confidently and reduce the risk of falls. By staying active, maintaining a safe environment, and being prepared, you can protect your independence.”
