Beaming Novak Djokovic told the world his rousing Australian Open comeback win over Nishesh Basavareddy was inspired by the brilliance of Andy Murray.
The Serb extolled the virtues of his new coach as his great rival made an instant impact in Melbourne against the man he lost four Finals to inside the Rod Laver Arena. Djokovic was up against it in the first set as the American won out in his Grand Slam debut. But Djokovic won 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 after the rising 19-year-old tennis star felt the heat in Melbourne.
And it was a Murray love-in for the Serb as he championed his new coach. Djokovic said: “It was a bit of a strange experience to have him court side in my box. We played for over 20 years against each other at the highest level. Great to have him on the same side of the net. He gave me great advice mid match.
“It’s good we have an opportunity now to have allowed coaching on the same side. It’s a completely different angle when you’re watching from the side. He’s been doing really well. It’s been an enjoyable experience. Hopefully we don’t stop here.”
