ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU/Gray News) – The roof of an Alaska home was partially torn off amid a severe windstorm, and the moment was captured on stunning security video.
Steven Wood’s Ring home security camera caught the moment part of the roof was ripped off the top of an adjacent house just before 11 a.m. Sunday in his Muldoon neighborhood. He says he and his family had just finished breakfast and were watching the high winds whip around outside when it happened.
“All of a sudden, I see the roof start to peel off, and all I can yell is ‘Incoming! Everybody run!’” Wood told KTUU. “All the plywood hit the window. It blew glass all over the house. It’s down the hallway, down the stairs, and it actually separated the drywall in the bedroom it hit so hard.”
Wood says the roofing material also smashed a gazebo on the property that he estimates to be near 1,000 pounds. The force of the wind and roofing material flying also flipped over a grill on the deck into the yard.
Winds at the time the roof came off were recorded nearby as measuring close to 75 miles per hour.
Wood says no one in his family was hurt by the roof coming off, pointing to the physical debris left in his yard as the only aftermath that was visible.
“The girls were quick to run down the hallway, and it hit and made some loud noises. It was scary,” he said. “Everyone’s safe. All this can be replaced and fixed.”
Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley were battered overnight Saturday into Sunday by the severe windstorm that saw a peak gust of 110 mph in Bear Valley.
The roof damage wasn’t the only major structure that failed: a pedestrian bridge spanning the Seward Highway partially collapsed onto the roadway early Sunday, closing the highway for several hours. The bridge’s concrete walkway was still standing, but the steel and wooden railings and roof fell victim to the winds.
The storm also left moderate flooding in some places, including in Palmer and an Eagle River woman’s basement that saw an estimated five feet of water.
