PHILIPPI, W.Va (WDTV) – An underground mine fire was reported at a Barbour County mine Monday.
Officials were alerted of the fire early this morning at the Leer South mine, which is just outside of Philippi, according to Andy Malinoski, spokesperson for the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training.
The entire mine was evacuated, and mining operations at the site have been shut down. As of 11:30 a.m., the fire was still ongoing, Malinoski said.
MHST and the company are working to determine the best strategy to continue mitigation and ways to extinguish the fire, Malinoski said.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
