Lanarkshire police have issued a warning about the dangers of walking on frozen water after young people were spotted walking on ice at Monklands Canal in Coatbridge.
As temperatures dropped below zero, people across the country have been seen walking, skating and playing on frozen lakes, lochs, ponds and rivers.
Officers received several reports about last week’s incident at Monklands Canal which sparked concerns locally.
Police in Lanarkshire are urging people to be extra vigilant as they shared safety advice.
A spokesman said: “We have received reports last week of youths walking on the ice at Monklands.
“Although the temperatures are beginning to rise now, we would like remind everyone of the dangers of walking on frozen lakes, ponds, rivers, and other bodies of water.
“Please stay vigilant and report any unsafe activities around frozen water. Remember, no shortcut or photo opportunity is worth risking your life.”
Key Safety Tips:
- Avoid walking on Ice – Ice can be unpredictable and may not support your weight. What seems solid may be dangerously thin.
- Supervise children and pets – Keep children and pets away from the edges of frozen water. Dogs should be kept on a lead near these areas.
- Avoid shortcuts – Don’t use frozen bodies of water as shortcuts or recreation areas.
- Educate children – Teach young people about the dangers of thin ice and why it’s important to avoid it.
If Someone Falls Through Ice:
- Do not attempt a rescue: Never walk onto the ice to save someone.
- Call 999 immediately: Provide as much detail as possible about the location.
- Encourage self-rescue: If possible, instruct the person to lie flat and spread their weight. Use items like branches or throw ropes to help them to safety from a distance.
