Shoppers are being urged not to consume a popular bakery item that was on sale at major supermarkets, including Asda and Sainsbury’s.

An alert to the Food Standards Scotland (FSS) has informed shoppers that McGhee’s Family Bakers are recalling packs of six Scottish Brown Rolls due to a potential health risk. A packaging error means several packs include white rolls that contain soya.

As this has not been declared on the list of ingredients, it means that the product poses a health risk to anyone with a soya allergy. The affected product will have the batch code LS5007 and a best before date of January 12, 2025.

The Express reports that a statement to the FSS website read: “McGhee’s Family Bakers are recalling packs of six Scottish Brown Rolls. Due to a packaging error, several packs include white rolls which contain soya. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya.”

The FSS added: “This product may contain soya making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya. If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to soya do not eat it.”

Point of sale notices explaining the recall have been issued by the company to its customers, sharing what to do if they have bought the affected items. Anyone with a soya allergy is being advised to return the bread rolls to stores for a full refund.

Asda and Sainsbury’s are said to have been advised to contact relevant allergy support organisations, which will inform members of the recall. The bread rolls are currently out of stock on multiple supermarket websites, including Tesco.

Anyone with enquiries about this allergy alert can contact the Scottish Food Crime and Incidents Unit on 01224 285100, or by emailing incidents@fss. scot. Customers can also contact McGhee’s Family Bakers by emailing [email protected]. Customers are advised they can write to the bakery at McGhee Family Bakers, located at 10 Keppochhill Drive, Glasgow, G21 1HX.

The FSS further commented: “These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

In a separate recall update, David Wood Baking Ltd has initiated a recall of Farmfoods 50 Cocktail Sausage Rolls due to a labelling error where packs contain cheese and onion rolls with undeclared milk.

The affected product is therefore unsuitable for those with a dairy intolerance or allergy. The recall concerns 700g packs with the batch code L4295 and a best before date of October 2025.
