Everyone wants to get the best bargains when they are shopping in order to save money, but it has always been a struggle to know when the best time to go to the supermarket is.

Well fear not, as a former assistant manager at Lidl has shared the secret to getting more for your money. If you shop at the budget supermarket but want to grab even more bargains, then you may want to read on.

Roo Dhissou revealed on Netflix’s 24 Hours in Lidl, which aired back in June, that there is a certain time of the day where shoppers can get up to 60 per cent off full price items.

She explained: “They have set points in the day where you do a check and a refill with whatever has been left out. You’ll actually see them [the items] being marked [down], so you’ll be able to get them before they go back out onto the shelves.”

As such, this time is between 4-5pm, as this is when workers will begin to mark down products.

However, there is one difference between Lidl markdowns compared to other supermarket stores, reports The Mirror. Instead of being marked down on the day, or night before, Lidl workers generally markdown items two days in advance, giving you more time to use your reduced item.

Catherine Shuttleworth, a marketing consultant for the supermarket, added: “First day it’s 30 per cent reduced, by the second day it goes down to 60 per cent.”

Another trick revealed on the show is that Lidl will reward shoppers with a finder’s fee if they know of a good site for a new store. The site needs to be in a “prominent location” with easy access and have a “strong pedestrian or traffic flow”.

If your idea is accepted, then Lidl could pay you 1.5% of the total freehold purchase price, or 10% of the first year’s rent for lease holds. Catherine added: “They reward the people, just normal people like you and me, to find sites for them where a Lidl can go.”

As the UK’s sixth biggest supermarket celebrates its 30th year, Richard Taylor, Lidl GB chief development officer, talks about the brand’s plans for the future. He said: “As we celebrate our 30th year, our commitment to ensuring that all households across the country have access to high quality produce at affordable prices is stronger than ever.

“We’re planning to open hundreds of new Lidl stores but ultimately see no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential. This is why we’re continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion.”

He added: “As we look ahead, we’re excited to welcome even more new shoppers to our existing stores, as well as those we’re planning to open across the country in the coming months and years.”

The documentary also mentioned one of the more confusing aspects of the stores, this being having the prices above the product. This can be confusing for some shoppers as we naturally look at the price below the product, as that is what we are used to. This has led to many customers only finding out the correct price once they make it to the checkout.

24 Hours in Lidl is available to watch now on Netflix.
