Perth city roads are heavily congested with the A90 Friarton Bridge closed in both directions due to fire.
The Lower Friarton recycling centre blaze near the structure has been ongoing since the early hours.
Motorists have posted on social media that roads in Perth city are currently gridlocked.
Tayside Police posted on Facebook: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a premises in the Friarton Road area of Perth.
“The incident was reported around 3.50am on Tuesday, 14 January, 2025. There are no injuries.
“The Friarton Bridge is currently closed in both directions with traffic on the M90 being diverted through Perth city centre.
“Locals are advised to avoid the area or consider alternative routes while officers and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deal with the incident.”
An SFRS spokesperson said on Tuesday morning: “We were alerted at 3.04am on Tuesday, 14 January, to reports of a fire at a recycling centre on Lower Friarton Road, Perth.
“At its height, Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene.
“Three fire appliances and specialist resources are still in attendance.
“There are no reported casualties and due to large volumes of smoke, we are asking people to avoid the area and close windows and doors in nearby homes.”
One motorist said: “[The] Dundee road was backed up to Kinfauns. What a nightmare this morning.”
Another motorist described he situation as “chaos” as Perth city roads are “gridlocked.”
In May last year firefighters worked through the night to put out a blaze at the city’s Friarton depot.
The dark fumes could be seen for miles around and residents near the depot were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.
It is believed it was caused by waste electrical material. There were no injuries
First Minister and Perthshire North MSP John Swinney said today: “I am deeply concerned about the occurrence of another fire at the recycling site beneath the Friarton Bridge.
“Stringent controls must be in place for site operations to prioritise the safety of staff and the general public, and to prevent disruptions like those experienced by the public this morning as a result of this incident.”
Perthshire Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said: “This incident is very concerning. Obviously, my first thoughts are that I hope no one has been hurt as a result of this devastating fire at the recycling centre.
“Local residents have been well advised to keep doors and windows closed because of the potential risk of harm from smoke.
“Due to the severity of the fire and subsequent smoke, the Friarton Bridge was closed, causing massive disruption, with traffic being gridlocked in Perth.”
Mr Fraser continued: “It is surely time for a review of safety at the recycling centre as there is clearly an issue with the fire risk there.
“As we have seen, the consequences of fires there are horrendous.
“We also have to ask how appropriate it is to have a centre like this located so close to a major trunk road, given the impact on journeys.”
