Football chiefs have slammed vandals who targeted their home ground on Saturday.

Youths threw flares and stones on to the pitch during Whitletts Vics’ 3-2 win over Lanark United.

A mob then returned to the scene and went on a vandalism spree after breaking into New Voluntary Park following the match.

The youngsters forced entry and spray-painted advertising banners and the club’s pavilion. The culprits were rumbled while trying to steal from a large container at the ground.

Whitletts Vics in the Community, the charity arm of Whitletts Victoria FC, has hit out at the yobs for leaving a clean-up operation.

Vandals targeted the ground after breaking in

A spokesperson told the Ayrshire Post: “Thankfully this has been an isolated incident and those responsible were disturbed while in the act.

“The damage could have been far worse had this not been the case. Throwing items on to the pitch was bad enough, but even worse was to return after the game and carry out this vandalism.”

Club bosses have handed CCTV footage to police and are urging parents to help them curb the behaviour.

The spokesperson added: “We are hoping that this will act as enough of a warning not to do this again.

“Police Scotland have been provided with the images that we have from in and outside New Voluntary Park and images of the group on the way to the game that have also been shared with us.

“We are really hoping there is no further damage to our property over the weekend or next coming weeks/weekends.

“We would ask parents, coaches and other clubs to help us address this behaviour to avoid any further issues.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.50pm on Saturday, we received a report of vandalism at a football pitch in the Glenmuir Place area of Ayr. Enquiries are ongoing.”
