LOCKHART, Texas — Body camera footage will not be released after an Austin Police Department (APD) officer shot a suspect during a SWAT standoff in Lockhart over the weekend, police said.
APD assisted the Lockhart Police Department during the incident on Saturday after receiving a call reporting a physical assault around 3 p.m. Officers arrived at the 900 block of South Brazos Street, where they found a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital and has since been released.
APD SWAT was dispatched to assist at around 5 p.m. after a suspect barricaded themselves in a house on First Street. The shooting then occurred at 7:34 p.m. According to Lockhart police, “The suspect resisted and as a result, sustained an injury.”
APD said the suspect was shot and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.
Per APD’s policy, body camera footage from police-involved shootings is typically released within 10 business days after an incident occurred. But on Tuesday, APD said at the request of the Caldwell County district attorney, this incident will not be treated as a “Critical Incident Briefing” and no materials will be released.
The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
There are two concurrent investigations into the shooting: a criminal investigation conducted by the Texas Rangers in conjunction with the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office, and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.
Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to contact APD at 512-974-6840 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 512-472-8477.
