LEWISBURG, W. Va. – With Martin Luther King Jr. Day coming up on Monday, Greenbrier County is gearing up for the return of the annual celebration in Lewisburg to honor Martin Luther King Junior’s legacy and vision.

This tradition has been going on for around four decades, regularly bringing hundreds of people out to commemorate the holiday.

The celebration begins on MLK Jr. Day at 11 a.m. with a gathering at the Greenbrier County Courthouse. After a speech from the mayor, the march will begin, with people bringing signs and singing on their way to the Lewisburg United Methodist Church.

There, they will hold a lunch, followed by a program that lets participants hear from this year’s guest speaker… civil rights activist Tanisha Hughes. Larry Davis, a committee member for Lewisburg’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration says the message spread by this annual tradition is “extremely important” for the community.

“…We just can’t forget that all men are created equal, and that’s the theme this year from the speech, the one that’s usually referred to as the ‘I Have a Dream Speech’ in 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., and one of those dreams he had was that the nation would live up to its creed that’s in the Declaration of Independence that ‘all men are created equal…’” says Davis.

Again, the opening ceremony will begin on Monday, January 20 at 11 a.m. at the Greenbrier County Courthouse. Davis encourages the community to join them, saying you’ll get a lot out of it if you do.
