A plea has been issued for clarity on the future of Dumfries’ Homebase store.

The DIY and garden chain entered administration in November before some stores were sold to CDS – which also owns The Range and Wilko.

However, the Dumfries branch at Cuckoo Bridge was not among them and closing down sale signs have recently appeared.

Now, South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has called on administrators Teneo to shed light on the store’s future.

It was one of more than 70 stores across the UK they had put up for sale, setting a November 29 closing date.

Mr Smyth said: “It’s no secret that Homebase has struggled in recent years, as families cut back during the cost of living crisis and there has been no sign of them returning to making a profit.

“The fact that we’re almost two months on and the Dumfries store is still in a state of limbo, despite ‘closing down’ sale signs going up, is really not on.

“It appears this site was not one of the stores bought by the Range but it is important that staff at the store in Dumfries are given clarity by administrators as soon as possible, and support.

“Homebase has been a part of the retail offer in Dumfries for many years and there is no doubt that if it ultimately closes, it will be a big loss to local customers.”

When the Standard asked Teneo about the future of the Dumfries shop earlier this month, a Teneo spokeswoman would only say: “All of our stores are continuing to trade, including stores acquired by CDS.

“From January 2025, Homebase will transfer around 10 stores each month to CDS which will be relaunched as The Range superstores.

“Talks with prospective buyers for the remainder of the stores are progressing.”
