The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a $3K reward that leads to an arrest after an abused dog died from its severe injuries.
The male pit bull mix, later named “Meatloaf” by the staff, was brought to the Smithtown Animal Shelter on November 5. A good Samaritan found the dog on Croft Lane with extensive injuries, including chemical burns and infected wounds.
“Unfortunately, Meatloaf’s injuries were too extreme, so he did not survive,” the Suffolk SPCA stated. “The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a $3K reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for this heinous act of animal cruelty.”
“The Suffolk County SPCA reminds the public that intentional harm to animals is against the law in New York,” the SPCA said. “Together, we can ensure that justice is served and prevent further acts of cruelty against animals in our community.”
The agency did not say how long the animal survived after arriving at the shelter.
The Suffolk County SPCA announced an identical reward last week for information following the discovery of the emaciated remains of a bulldog puppy in a backpack in Miller Place. That dog was found in November, too.
Aggravated cruelty to animals is a felony under New York State law and carries a sentence of up to two years if convicted.
