If you’re looking for a regal name for your baby, or are just plain curious about popular names, research has been conducted to reveal the top baby names with a bit of royal flair.
From the obvious contenders of “William”, “Harry” and “Charlotte”, to lesser known names such “Sienna”, “Eugenie” and “Ernest”, there was a wide variety of popular royal names revealed by this data.
The study was conducted by Children’s therapy website Meemzy Magic, who compiled a list of key members of the British Royal Family before comparing it to data from the Office of National Statistics. They were then able to identify the top ten most popular royal baby names for boys and girls.
Key findings
One of the most significant findings of the study was that 2,613 baby girls with the royal name “Isla” were born in 2023. This made it the most popular girls’ name of the chart. Princess Anne’s granddaughter, and the great-granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, Isla Phillips is the current royal holder of this name.
“George” was the most popular royal name for baby boys, and 3,699 were named in 2023. While there may have been many royal Georges throughout British history, the most current is the firstborn son of Prince William, Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Other top names on the royal charts consisted of “Mia”, “Charlotte” and “Sienna” for girls, while “Archie”, “Harry” and “William” were kings of the boys’ list. Mia Grace Tindall is the daughter of Zara Tindall and the granddaughter of Princess Anne, Princess Royal, and the great-granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II. This was the second most popular girls’ name on the list.
“Sienna” comes from the Italian city of Siena. This royal name was chosen by Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi for their daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi. “Charlotte” was revealed as the fourth most popular royal baby girl name in the UK, with 1,496 baby girls born with the name in 2023. Of course, this name belongs to the daughter of William and Kate.
“Archie” was second after “George” on the most popular royal baby names list. The name became widely recognised with the birth of Harry and Meghan’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. This playful name has Scottish origins meaning “genuine” or “bold”.
Taking up the third spot on the list was “Harry”, a name has become synonymous with Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex. This shortened form of the name “Henry” means “ruler of the household”. The fourth most popular boys’ name on the list was “William”, and 1,806 baby boys were given the name in 2023. This ever-popular name has Germanic origins, meaning “resolute protector”.
Interesting to note also is that more royal girl names appeared in the data than boy names. This could indicate that the Royal Family consists of a wider variety of girls compared to boys.
