AUSTIN, Texas — Arguably the best player to ever wear the Verde & Black is leaving the club.
Forward Sebastian Driussi is heading to River Plate, the first club he ever played for, after Austin FC and the Argentine club reached an agreement on a $10 million transfer, according to reports.
Driussi joined Austin FC in July 2021 and made his debut that August. He is the club’s all-time leading scorer, having tallied 45 goals in 106 appearances.
Prior to his stint in Austin, the Argentine national played locally for River Plate, ascending through the club’s youth program and eventually becoming the club’s first-team forward. In 2017, he left River Plate and joined Zenit Saint Petersburg, scoring 21 goals in 95 appearances and winning three titles during his time with the Russian powerhouse.
The move allows Austin FC to add a new designated player, which is a designation the MLS gives to players who sign with clubs that normally would not be able to afford them. Each MLS club is permitted to have three designated players on their roster.
With Driussi’s departure, Brandon Vazquez and Osman Bukari remain Austin FC’s only designated players.
