Here’s a breakdown of just some of the events you can attend in Central Texas this weekend.

AUSTIN, Texas — The weekend is upon us and, as always, there are a ton of things going on in the Austin area! From dance parties to Dolly parties, there’s no shortage of fun activities happening over the next few days.

Here’s a breakdown of just some of the events you can attend this weekend.

Themed dance parties

Do you long for the days of ’80s new wave? What about the indie sleaze era of the 2000s? Well, you’re in luck because this weekend, there are dance parties dedicated to both!

On Friday, The Highball will host “’80s Obsession” featuring the Dead Love Club, a dance party set to all the biggest new wave hits, from Depeche Mode to New Order and everyone in between.

Then on Saturday, indie sleaze fans can don their skinny jeans and eyeliner for a night of indie rock and electroclash at Parish, where DJ Boyfriend ATX will be spinning the best of The Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and more at “Sleaze Freaks: An Indie Sleaze Dance Party.”

Dolly Parton birthday bashes

Country legend Dolly Parton will turn 79 years young on Sunday, and several Austin bars are celebrating with colorful, over-the-top birthday bashes in her honor. Here are a few of the Dolly Parton parties planned for Sunday:

  • Dolly Parton’s Bubbly Birthday Bash – Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dottiewood Studios (1601 Headway Circle, Ste B)
  • Dolly Parton Birthday Bash with the Side Saddles, DiscoTex, The Nowhere Band and Snack Supper – Sunday with doors at 6 p.m. at The Far Out Lounge and Stage (8504 S. Congress Ave.)
  • 5th Annual Dolly Birthday Bash & Tribute Show – Sunday from 7 p.m. until midnight at Sagebrush (5500 S. Congress Ave.)
  • Dolly’s Party! – Karaoke starts Sunday at 9 p.m. at Kitty Cohen’s (2211 Webberville Road #3548)

Chili Cook-Off at The Liberty

The Liberty at 1618 E. Sixth St. will host its 14th Annual Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, with doors at 2 p.m. and the contest and tasting beginning at 5 p.m. 

Ten contestants will compete for a first-place price of two tickets to the Austin FC season opener. There will also be other prizes to raffle off and drink specials to complement all that chili.

  • Rodney Carrington – Saturday at ACL Live at the Moody Theater
  • Stoney LaRue – Friday and Saturday at Gruene Hall
  • City-Wide Vintage Sale – through Sunday at Palmer Events Center
