Gardening can be a pricey pastime, with every failure to flourish leading to more frustration in our green spaces. While challenges can be rewarding, it’s also vital to include some robust plants in our gardens that nearly look after themselves.

Sure, all greenery needs the basics – water, sustenance, and suitable conditions, but there are some plants that stand firm against neglect.

For those whose fingers are less than green, Morris Hankinson, Hopes Grove Nurseries director, has shared a list of “indestructible” and “impossible to kill garden plants”. These hardy plants are ideal for those wanting to inject some effortless vibrancy into their gardens as spring and summer approach, reports the Express.

1. Flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum King Edward VII)

This hardy choice is perfect for any garden, featuring lush deep crimson blooms and aromatic mid to dark green foliage. Hankinson hails it as “a great, easy to grow” spring option that’s too often overlooked.

He advises: “Ribes will never get out of hand, they are easy to trim with a simple tidy up after flowering and easy to care for. You get a show of flowers the first spring after planting.”

2. Forsythia (Forsythia spectabilis)

Hankinson extolled the virtues of forsythia, celebrating it as a “completely bulletproof spring flowering shrub” that bursts with vibrant yellow blooms by March. He added: “They establish willingly from bare root plants that cost little more than coppers or from larger potted plants.”

Hankinson also assured gardening enthusiasts about its low-maintenance appeal, stressing forsythia’s ease of care with a simple post-blooming trim being enough for it to remain thriving, saying: “they will grow and thrive just about anywhere”.

3. Deutzia

Deutzia, another gardening gem, is lauded for its abundant blossoms and versatility. Hankinson hailed this “tough, hardy, and easy to grow” addition to the garden requires minimal upkeep. He added they are “drought resistant” and “need hardly any maintenance”.

As a member of the hydrangea family, deutzia offers an array of beautiful blossoms varying in shape and form from one variety to the next.

Hankinson noted: “Grown for their delicate star-shaped flowers that cover the shrubs in June they are great for bridging the gap between spring and summer flowering plants and shrubs.”
