HOUSTON — Before Sean Christopher Davis was killed in a shootout with law enforcement Wednesday evening, he shot and wounded a heroic K-9, according to the US Marshals Service.
K-9 Rocky alerted officers after finding Davis hiding in a trash bin in the same southwest Houston strip center where Davis gunned down Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jesus Vargas hours earlier. Davis shot the K-9 twice before he was shot and killed while still in the dumpster.
“The amazing aspect here that people have to understand, the K-9 saved lives,” said Chief T. Michael O’Connor with the US Marshals. “When the K-9 went in there, he decided to take the dog out.”
An emotional O’Connor said Davis had no intention of being taken alive and he proved that by shooting the K-9 and then firing at other officers as they surrounded the dumpster.
In the middle of the chaos, law enforcement officers carried the injured US Marshals K-9 to a Texas DPS helicopter so that it could be rushed to a veterinary hospital for treatment. The Houston Police Department said the dog was stable and expected to survive.
