A volunteering festival highlighting a wide variety of opportunities to connect with community groups across Lanark is taking place in the town next weekend.

Clydesdale volunteer festival will feature dozens of local groups runnning information stalls, spotlight talks and arranging taster sessions to showcase their work and how interested attendees can get involved.

The free event takes place on Saturday, January 25, from 11am to 2pm at St Mary’s hall on Bannatyne Street, and no booking is required to attend.

It is being hosted by Clydesdale community initiatives, who describe it as a “call to action for the community”, sharing opportunities to make a difference and access all the benefits of volunteering from new friendships and interests to health

The participating organisations include local groups New Lanark Trust, Lanark community development trust, Wiston Lodge, Healthy Valleys, Clydesdale Foodbank and Biggar Museum, with more to be confirmed.

Joining them will be Lanarkshire groups Covey Befriending, Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire, The Haven, Get Walking Lanarkshire and Women’s Shed, plus Scotland’s Gardens.

All those attending will be able to meet representatives of the groups, listen to 15-minute talks with more detail about the work of each group, and register to find out more or attend taster sessions for those of interest to them.

Organisers say: “The festival is the perfect opportunity to explore what meaningful volunteer opportunities are available in the area and an opportunity to connect with local organisations that fit with your interests.

“Volunteering offers countless benefits, from improving mental and physical health to helping with meaningful community projects and fostering new friendships, and whether you have a few hours to spare or are looking for a regular commitment, there’s something for everyone.

“Come along and find out how you can contribute to making our community a better place; we look forward to seeing you there.”
