Members of Lanarkshire Philatelic Society’s committee did their posts proud as they took the lead for the group’s first meeting of 2025.

President Alex Magowan opened proceedings with a fascinating display called Turtles, featuring stamps, miniature sheets, and postcards.

Dr Brian Dow then matched the chilly temperatures outside with a feature on the various sports at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway.

Elsie Miller illustrated the interesting story of Dr Albert Schweitzer who went out to French Equatorial Africa and founded a leprosy hospital.

Caroline Watt presented a wonderfully varied display of colourful postcards of animals, ships, still life, fashion, flowers, fruit and babies.

Robert Watt’s presentation was on Irish, W.B.Yeats, Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde and James Joyce, and French, Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas, writers.

Terry Woods focused on the changing postmark of Blantyre – and High Blantyre – through the years as well as views of Blantyre Post Office in its ever changing venues.

Bobby Forrest then stepped up with a display of memorable covers showing members of the crew of the RMS Titanic – and stamps, postmarks and newspaper cuttings about the April 15, 1912, disaster.

Andy Napier told the history of locally printed stamps issued in 1870 by the Fiji Times Express newspaper.

In 1871, the official Post Office opened and stamps printed bearing the CR monogram – King of Fiji.

Member David Brown expressed thanks to all for “presenting most interesting and variable displays”.

The Society’s next meeting will take place in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, on Friday, January 31, at 1.30pm.

Member Walter Simpson will present a display on Germany and anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history or postcards is “very welcome to attend”.
