A man caught with a knife in Airdrie town centre claimed he was going fishing.

Police officers had pulled over a car for a routine check in South Bridge Street.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard Cameron Boag was a passenger and there was a strong smell of cannabis inside the vehicle.

A search was carried out and no drugs were found, but a blade was recovered from Boag who told the officers: “I’m going to buy fishing equipment. I’m going fishing.”

Boag admitted carrying a knife without reasonable excuse while the subject of three separate bail orders on July 9 last year.

He also admitted possessing cocaine at his home in Commonhead Lane, Airdrie, on October 29, again while on bail.

An allegation that he was concerned in the supply of the Class A drug was dropped.

The court heard police searched Boag’s house under warrant and found wraps and small bags of cocaine.

The total value was around £500 and he insisted it was for personal use.

He is currently under curfew on a six-month electronic tagging order for another matter.

Sheriff Tony McGlennan deferred sentence until next month for background reports and continued bail.
