AUSTIN, Texas — Wide receiver Johntay Cook is no longer a member of the Texas Longhorns or Washington Huskies.
Cook, who entered the transfer portal in November after parting ways with Texas, has now reportedly left Washington just weeks after transferring.
The former five-star recruit signed with Texas in 2023 as one of the program’s star-studded recruits alongside quarterback Arch Manning. However, Cook saw his playing time dwindle this season.
Cook started off the season with a solid game against Colorado State and Texas-San Antonio. However, Cook recorded no catches against Michigan and was a non-factor against Louisiana-Monroe or Mississippi State. His last appearance came against Oklahoma, where he again failed to record a catch.
In November, Cook left Texas unexpectedly. Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian declined to provide details on the decision but said it was mutual.
“We have nothing but respect for [Cook] and his family,” Sarkisian told reporters. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
The North Texas native visited Florida before committing to Washington on Dec. 28. Now The Seattle Times reports Cook is no longer playing with the team for reasons unknown. According to the report, Cook was enrolled on time and on campus to start classes earlier this month. His Instagram account appeared to show him back home in the Dallas area on Wednesday following the report.
Cook ended his time at Texas totaling 16 catches for 273 yards and two touchdowns in 20 games. He was a member of the DeSoto team that won a state championship in 2022 and ranked one of the top 50 wide receivers in the country before committing to Texas.
