SAN ANTONIO — The man accused of being behind the wheel of a semitruck left abandoned in San Antonio with dozens of dead and dying migrants inside has reportedly plead guilty.

The plea comes months after the driver, identified as 48-year-old Homero Zamorano Jr., filed a motion to dismiss the case against him for his alleged role in the deaths of 53 migrants found in the big rig along Quintana Road in June 2022.

Court documents show Zamorano plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to transport aliens resulting in death, causing serious bodily injury, and placing lives in jeopardy; one count of transportation of aliens resulting in death; and one count of transportation of aliens resulting in serious bodily injury and placing lives in jeopardy.

Zamorano is set to be sentenced on April 24 and will be facing a maximum penalty of life in prison. A federal district court judge will reportedly determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Several others have plead guilty for their involvement in the deadliest human smuggling event in U.S. history.
