New College Lanarkshire has launched The Learning Well – a ground-breaking initiative aimed at addressing the low numbers of adults with degrees in North Lanarkshire.
The college has developed the online platform for adult learners to study at home while still having access to its support.
The 2022 Census found that only 23.1 per cent of those over 16 in North Lanarkshire had a degree level qualification – the second lowest of any council area in Scotland and well below the national average.
The Learning Well is supported and accredited by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and has been designed to tackle the education shortfall in North Lanarkshire by offering flexible learning opportunities tailored to the unique needs of adult learners.
The programme combines dedicated online environment, expert lecturers, a supportive environment with dedicated mentorship and a curriculum that blends practical and academic knowledge, ensuring participants are well-prepared for success.
The first course being offered through the learning initiative is the BA in business and leadership, a programme specifically designed to empower learners with skills immediately applicable in the workplace.
New College Lanarkshire principal and CEO, Professor Christopher Moore, said: “The Learning Well is more than an educational platform; it is a lifeline for adults in Lanarkshire who feel that higher education has been out of reach.
“By offering the chance to study a degree, in a way that suits you, we are committed to ensuring everyone in Lanarkshire has the opportunity to access the education they deserve.”
One of the first students to sign up, Victoria Fleeting, added: “I signed up for the degree through The Learning Well as I’m keen to develop my skills in management and leadership, which will support my career progression.
“The link with UWS is very exciting and I see it as a great opportunity to gain a qualification online while networking with others who are pursuing similar goals.
“The 32-week online format works well with my family commitments, making it more convenient for me.”
