Police investigating the “unexplained” death of a toddler at a nursery have issued an update, as tributes are paid to the youngster.

The two-year-old boy, whose name has not yet been disclosed to the public, tragically died after what was described as a “medical episode” at the Early Learners Day Nursery in Bootle, Merseyside, on Tuesday, January 14.

He was rushed to hospital, but was sadly pronounced dead. An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, reports the Mirror.

Merseyside Police said on Friday that enquiries were ongoing, as locals shared tributes and messages of support for the family online and left flowers, teddy bears and messages outside the nursery following the news.

One tribute, shared on social media by Charlie Robinson said: “R.I.P you beautiful little boy! Fly high mate – what a beautiful boy you were.” Nickie Jones added: “Every parent’s worst fear when they drop their baby off. Thinking of the family and staff. Absolutely heart breaking.”

JR Robbo said: “I cannot imagine the absolute heartbreak and unimaginable loss for the parents and family, and also all the staff at early learners they are amazing staff and I imagine they are all heartbroken and numb by the loss of the little boy, my thoughts go out to everyone involved and to the little boy rest in peace.”

Debbie Orme added: “Heart breaking the poor family and nursery staff. Thinking of you all.”

The nursery, which was last year rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, reportedly shared a message on social media following the tragedy. It read: “Dear parents and carers, as you are aware, this afternoon a medical emergency occurred at the nursery. It is with devastating sadness that we have to inform you of a child’s passing.

“To enable everyone to process today’s tragic events, we have made the decision to close the nursery for the remainder of the week, and also to allow us to continue working with relevant agencies. We trust that you understand our decision at this difficult time and we will update you all with further information in the coming days. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
