FORNEY, Texas — Hidden among the sounds of booming construction in one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation, a symbol of American freedom sits in its nest gracefully.
A bald eagle’s nest has been spotted in Forney, drawing both awe and curiosity from residents.
“I just see one bird in the nest, looks like he’s either fixing something or eating something,” said Trent Herchman, Texas Parks and Wildlife.
The eagles built its nest in an area that’s transforming rapidly from open land to residential developments in Kaufman County. Herchman has been keeping a close eye on the eagles since receiving calls about them in September.
“They’ve been here, they mate for life, they’ve been here forever,” Herchman said. “This used to be just land and now it’s becoming residential property.”
Despite the fast-paced growth, there are safety measures in place to protect the nesting site. Surrounding the area is a protective barrier which people, nor construction are allowed.
“Where you see the T-posts and all the way back to the white posts, will not be disturbed,” Herchman explained, pointing out boundaries established to safeguard the birds.
The City of Forney is also committed to balancing progress with preservation. Leaders acknowledge the challenge of maintaining the small-town charm while meeting the demands of development.
“Growth is inevitable, but we have to keep to our roots,” said Zach Smith, a spokesperson for the city. “There’s also a country feel to it, a small-town feel to it.”
As the symbol of strength, freedom, and pride watches over its rapidly changing surroundings, the presence of these eagles serves as a reminder of nature’s resilience amid human expansion.
For now, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to pause and appreciate this rare glimpse of a national treasure.
“You might as well see it while you can,” Herchman said.
